Harpagophytum procumbens (Devil's Claw)
Devil's Claw has a long history of traditional use for treating painful and inflammatory conditions. Indeed many published scientific studies have demonstrated the efficacy of Harpagophytum as a safe and effective anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving natural medicine. After Pelargonium sidoides, Devil's Claw is the most widely used South African natural medicine in Europe.
The most recent study, by Huang et al., 2006, again confirms these pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory activities activities. The study suggests that the inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2 and inducible nitric oxide by harpagoside, a key active phytochemical in Devil's Claw, involves suppression of NF-kappaB activation, which in turn inhibits inflammation and subsequent pain.
Siphonochilus aethiopicus (African Ginger)
African Ginger has been used medicinally for centuries for safely treating headache, pain and inflammation. The plant belongs to the Ginger family, but has a completely different phytochemical profile to the domestic ginger used in cooking. Scientific studies to understand the chemistry and pharmacology of the plant are still in progress. Lindsey et al., 1999, demonstrated that African Ginger (Siphonochilus) has among the highest cyclooxygenase-1 inhibitory activity of ten medicinal plants tested.
Xysmalobium (Uzara)
Xysmalobium (Uzara) has a long history of use in South Africa for treating mild stress and anxiety. Only recently have scientific studies started to investigate the pharmacology of this important plant.
Tension Headache product for the treatment of Dysmennorhoea
The ingredients of the Tension Headache product have been traditionally used for the treatment of dysmennorhoea. There is also scientific evidence to support the use of these products as analgesics for menstrual cramps. Siphonochilus aethiopicus (African Ginger) specifically has been shown to inhibit cyclooxygenase, and thus inhibits prostaglandin synthesis, which reduces uterine contraction.
